Transport

Although St Andrews doesn't have its own train station anymore, it is relatively easy to get to. It is only an hour away from Edinburgh airport and buses travel frequently to major cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh.

By Air

The town lies approximately 50 miles north-east of Edinburgh, 14 miles south-east of Dundee, 78 miles south of Aberdeen and 82 miles east of Glasgow

From Edinburgh Airport you can proceed by "Fly by Bus" Airlink bus to the centre of Edinburgh (Haymarket or Waverley Stations) and then by rail to Leuchars, the nearest train station to St Andrews.

There are taxis outside all of these airports.

Alternatively you could hire a car from one of the airport car hire companies. These vary from airport to airport. Please check on the airport website for further information

By Bus

St Andrews is serviced by its own bus station that connects to local fishing villages, cities and tourist attractions. For advice on timetables and fares, go to Traveline Scotland

If you are arriving at Leuchars, there is a taxi stand there operating until late at night and a bus service from directly outside the station. If you are in St Andrews and need to go to Leuchars to go to Aberdeen, Edinburgh or down to London for example, there is a regular bus service from the St Andrews Bus Station or you can catch a taxi at the taxi stand on Bell St, St Andrews.

By Car

From Edinburgh (S)

  • Cross the Forth Road Bridge (A90) after Edinburgh.
  • Shortly after the bridge A90 becomes M90.
  • Proceed north along M90 to Junction 2a (Dunfermline) onto A92.
  • Follow the A92 (through Glenrothes) until just before Cupar.
  • Join the A91 and follow to St Andrews.

From Glasgow (SW)

  • Travel east along the M8 to the Forth Road Bridge, via the M9 and A8000 link road to the A90.
  • Follow instructions "From Edinburgh (S)" above.

From Dundee and Aberdeen (N)

  • Cross the Tay Road Bridge on the A92 (South).
  • After approximately 1 mile, at roundabout turn left onto A914.
  • A914 becomes A919 at St Michaels.
  • Follow A919 to Leuchars.
  • At Guardbridge join A91 and follow to St Andrews.
